Milford Sound Travel Forum

I am planning a tour of the south island. Is November or March a better time to visit Doubtful and Milford Sounds with regards to climate and tranquillity?

Milford sound is probably the wettest place in NZ on average so the tour guide says it rains 300 days of the year, the two days we were there were perfect and that was in January, a little cold in the wind……….that time of year is fine just be prepared.


So take a raincoat and stay over night on the boat……….but bring your fly spray as the NZ Midges on the west coast sting.

March is usually more settled than Nov but it is notoriously unpredictable there

Thanks for the info on the weather front but a bit worried about the midges are they still biting in March? Do you recommend total cover up?

YOu can get pretty good repilants in NZ, youll be find it you cover yourself in that, the sandflies as we call them, only really leave in the winter.

We went in Nov, a little bit rainy but beautiful all the same.

We went to Milford and Doubtful Sound at the end of January, the weather and scenery was great, but bear in mind that part of NZ has a heavy rainfall most of the year. March is pretty warm, so alot of the waterfalls, etc., may not be as spectacular.
