| Estado de México | Holidays in Mexico Posted: Fri November 25, 2005 06:42 AM UTC
Hi there,
my husband and I will be travelling through Mexico over Christmas (for our honeymoon) and he is particularly interested in seeing lots of the Olmec sites, ie museums etc. Will we have problems with places being closed because of holidays over Christmas? When are the Mexican Public Holidays? Will these affect the running of buses? Many thanks, Skye and Chris |

Busses in Mexico operate year-round, without interruption. During holiday periods, additional equipment is added to handle the increased demand. Going to an archeological site or museum might prove disappointing on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve and New Year's Day, but I don't think there are interruptions in service other days. Some sites are typically closed on Monday. I'm assuming you've gotten yourself either the Lonely Planet or Moon guidebooks to Mexico. Lots of helfpul information is in those books. And, don't forget to check the member pages here at VT, where you'll find tons of helpful hints. Best of luckk!

GoMexico's advice about transportation is spot on. The Villahermosa Archaeological Park does not have a web site (it's surprising that Tabasco State doesn't have a state web site- well it does but it's little more than an email address) so I can't say the Park would be closed but the liklihood of it being open are infintesimally small.
My suggestion is to visit a large book store and look through the travel books for hours of operation not only for La Venta but Palenque and other major sites. Chances are that they will all be closed on Christmas which falls on a Sunday this year. If nothing looks promising, I'd rent a car and explore.

Thanks for your comments. As you say, the buses were wonderful and were no problem over the Christmas period. The La Venta Olmec Park was closed on Christmas day, but open the next day and was fabulous.
