Hello,
I am planning to be in Varenna for three days next September. We will be coming into Varenna by boat from Como after taking the train from Milan. However, if I'm reading the navigazione.it. site correctly, there isn't a mid-morning boat back to Como. Is this correct? If so, I was thinking of taking the train from Varenna to Milan. Is this a scenic route, and is the train station in Varenna accessible from the main area on foot?

Ciao, there is a boat from Varenna to Menaggio. Then you must change boat and take the one that go to Como. I suggest to wait for the next year summer timetable if you want more sure. In Varenna there is a train station. It isn't scenic route due the many tunnel along the railway. You can take the train to Lecco and than go to Milano Porta Garibaldi or Milano Centrale. Ciao.

Mille grazie, Cristian! That information really helps, since I didn't realize you had to go to Menaggio first before going onto Como by boat. I will look for the next year's schedule on that website.

The town is small and it is a short walk from the train station to the main area. You can take the boat to Bellagio or Menaggio and take the Malpensa Express to the airport. You can also take the bus to Como from Bellagio.

Thanks for that info, Barbara. It does look like a very small town. I was actually considering a stay at Eremo Gaudio Hotel, just outside the main area. They advised taking a taxi from the station to the hotel, but I find it hard to believe it would take that long to walk that far. Either way, the train sounds like the easiest way to get there. Thanks!

Hi, you can't take the Malpensa Express from Varenna. You can take it from Milano Cadorna or Saronno. If you arrive to Como you must take the train of Ferrovie Nord Milano to Saronno and here you must change the train and to take the Malpensa Express. After 30 minutes you arrive to Malpensa.
