mount kinabalu

hi,

my friend and i will be arriving at kota kinabalu in the evening at about 9 pm on a tuesday in january. we plan to climb mount kinabalu on thursday/friday. my questions:

(a) how far is the airport to town and to kota kinabalu park? do the lodgings there arrange for airport transfers?
(b) which hotel do you recommend we stay if we want to do most arrangements for the climb on wednesday and can we get to that hotel from the airport? we'd like a private room with an attached toilet and our budget is about US$30-50. easy to get metered taxis? or airport transfer would be great!
(c) we will try to book a room at laban rata in advance; if we cant, how do we check for cancellations when we are in kk? do they have an office in town or one which we can call?

many many thanks in advance

For the first night you will have to stay at KK. The airport is about 15 minutes from town. Just catch a cab, they are real cheap. It is then a further 1-1.5 hr drive to the Kinabalu National Park. You can either arrange for private transport or a bus. Bus is much cheaper obviously but it may take a bit longer. The hotel staff will tell you from where to catch the bus.

As for accomodation in the park, I stayed at the Kinabalu Rose Cabin - nice, clean, quite cheap and with incredible views of the park & mountain. Very highly recommended. They can also help you to arrange everything for the climb. Website is : http://kinabalurosecabin.8m.com/ and e-mail contact is krc@tm.net.my.

Happy travels!

Alison

I was there in the first week of this month. To answer your specific questions:
a. Alison has explained it is about 10 minutes from town. You should go to taxi counter in the arrival hall to buy a taxi ticket. In general, it costs RM17 to the city centre. Lodging can arrange for you of course, at a fee.

b. There are a wide range of hotels, be it from backpackers to 5 star resort. I recommend you visit this web sitev --> accommodation for the type and price which suits your needs. http://www.sabahtourism.com/

c. Booking a room in advance is highly recommended. Visit this site for booking arrangement: http://www.suterasanctuarylodges.com/ It centralises the booking of the accommdation in Mt. Kinabula and Poring Hot Spring.

Cheers.

Alternatively, as other VT member has recommended, you should join a package tour. The Sabah Tourism site also has a list of all tour operators which can assist you. You can also consider the one that I joined: Borneo Wildlife, please see my travel page and travelogues to Mt.inabalu for information.
