| Cameroon | Several Questions Posted: Sun November 13, 2005 01:31 AM UTC
Hi,
I am planning to visit Cameroon next summer and have a few questions. Maybe somebody with recent experience can answer them. 1. How easy is it to find a cybercafe? I plan to teach online while there and need to stay in touch with my students. Do hotels offer reasonable rates? 2. How much money should I bring -- not counting hotels/flights? I know it's a difficult question but I usually buy just a few souvenirs and maybe some books, CDs, etc. What are average prices for small things like that? 3. Do hotels offer laundry service? I would think they do -- but just in case. Many thanks for your help! |

Avoid Camair - i had a terrible experience. Do spent about a week there - in the main cities - Yaounde and Douala? internet cafe's are common in Africa. In fact more availabe than in paris where i had to walk a mile to get a one and it was $3 an hour. What a pity!
You will enjoy staying there provided you get there with the right attitude. You need to have lots of lodgistics before getting there. Of couse you know what i mean - anti-malaria, anti diarehea? etc. regards

Hi, hope this helps.
1, Cybercafes are plentiful all over Cameroon although connections are slow. approx prices: 400cfa per hour 1000cfa for 3 hours 2000 for 8 hours 2, 'Hotels' offer good rates compared to the west but very different standards. For a room with flushing toilet, hot water and clean sheets you will probably pay 10,000cfa upwards per night. Your best bet is to try and stay in the Baptist mission rest houses which have 'dorms' however there is never anyone there so you are pretty much guaranteed a room to your self. The most important thing is they are clean, have flushing toilet, sometimes hotwater and are only around 3,000cfa per night. If you want to stay more long term you can negotiate a better price. I am currently staying in one in Belo - North West province near Bamenda and it's great. So far as bringing money thats entirely up to you. A quick price guide: Beer 450cfa bottle of wine 900cfa meal in local reataurant - 500cfa meal in 'whitemans restaurant' - 4000cfa copied cd - 700cfa umberella 1500cfa 3, Not too sure that hotels offer laundry, maybe the more enpensive ones do. You could certainly offer the cleaner a little extra and they would wash them by hand though. When you make it to Cameroon make sure you visit the North West in particular Belo and Fundong. The scenery, wildlife and tracking/walking is phenominal.
