| Isla Mujeres | January Travel to Isla Mujeres Posted: Tue November 1, 2005 11:14 PM UTC
We have a January 8th trip planned to Isla Mujeres and plans to stay at Hotel Na Balam. Does anyone have a reliable resource to check the conditions following Wilma? I cannot get a response from the hotel and suspect communications may still be down. thx!

Some friends returned Saturday. They say the island is now 2 islands due to tidal surge. Their house is VERY damaged.

I am sure things will be nice by January. My understanding is that there was major damage in the midriff lagoon (right through my old neighborhood!!!) but have no reason to think that Na Balam is damaged much.
Try this site for a residents' forum http://www.islamujeres.info/home.asp If they are slow or down, try them later.

Here are some pictures of damage on Isla...damage I would term EXTREMELY minimal and typical. Some of these look worse than they are. The tiles, for instance, are no big deal. Palapa roofs can be replaced in a day or two and should be replaced every decade or so anyway. The sandy streets look bad, but several of the Playa Norte streets are already sand...no problem.
Many of the houses shown intact here are in VERY vulnerable places and show no structure problems. The beach with the sand piled up to the windows of the blue and white kiosk is North Beach...the shot is 100 yards from Na Balam. Too much sand is not a problem...last big blow took the sand away, which was ugly and sad. Things don't look very bad at all http://www.cancuncare.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16

I just came back from a very nice vacation on Isla staying in a not expensive mid-island colourful and fully furnished apartment. They fixed all the damages very quickly. I definitely recommend the place.
