Hello,

I'll be in Jerusalem for a week starting from Sat 5th, I would like some advice on what is the best area to stay in to explore the City, the places to go out, any things to avoid as a woman traveller?

I'd definitely recommend you to stay near theold city. Either at the Lutheran hostel / hotel which seems to be nice ir at the Petra Hostel. but check for more info in Jerusalem pages of people here, yo might get more ideas.

The only thing i'd say to avoid as a woman alone is maybe at nights dont walk
at the old city it self. Asides that you should be fine.

As for places to go out, i know that there are many places in Ben Yehuda St. area and in the Russian court area... anyone correct e if im wrong please..
I dont know Jerusalem's nightlife too well.

Enjoy.
S.

Sharon is right, stay near the old city. The most obvious part is near Jaffa Gate (where Petra hostel is). I personally prefer Beit-Shmuel outside the walls near Jaffa Gate (expensive, but nice), or Golden Gate Hostel in the Muslim quarter. This Golden Gate Hostel is cheap and clean. I once asked the owner how comes this hostel looks so "European" in the middle of a quarter that is not so famous for being clean ;-) So, the guy told me he lived long time in London and he knows what Westerners expect from a hostel. I think there is no problem walking during night in the old city; I mean, I don't think you might be robbed, hurt, raped, etc. But there is nothing to see there at night.

Two weeks ago I stayed in the Jerusalem Hostel on Jaffa Road, next to Ben Yehuda Street (western Jerusalem). It was only a 10/15 minutes walk to the old city . Rooms are cheap and simple, but clean and safe. I found it a perfect location to explore all of the Old City.
