Re: Old Man of the Mountain Posted: Sat May 3, 2003 06:09 PM UTC
I was sad to hear about it today as I have never seen it and it was on my list of things to see now that I have returned to live in the United States. I hope they try something.

Having seen it, I'd say reconstruction seems implausible. I mean, it was a significant part of a not inconsiderable mountain. Even if such a thing were possible, it's hard to imagine who would pay for it. This is the first I'd heard about the collapse, and my sympathy goes to our neighbors to the north.

That is too bad. Another victim of the horrible winter of the Northeast this year.

I'd been hiking near it a couple of years ago and took a photo of it, so I'm glad I took the chance to see it.

Yes, I heard about it an hour ago and was shocked. It was said to be due erosion from recent heavy rainfall. They've been trying to support it with cables, but apparents unsuccessfully. That's too bad, because NH will have to find a new state logo. I'm also thankful I took a picture of it not so long ago.

NH Governor said he would see to it that it gets rebuilt. The state has no money so they will probably do a money fund drive to get enough to rebuild the face. The five-rock face was heavily cabled together. At least no one was hurt.

It is a sad day but I am sure with the might of the people (and a few $$$) it will be rebuilt.

I grew up in Lowell, Massachusetts & had been to the cliff dozens of times. Having been living in & out of the U.S. for nearly the last decade, I had planned to bring my three-year-old son & my wife to New Hampshire for a vacation. This was on the agenda. I can't belive it's gone.

Hi , on the bottom of MSNBC they flashed it on the bottom. It also read they have been using cables for almost 100 years! Nothing about rebuilding though. Thanks, David

I can hardly believe that the old man collapsed, though he's been on "life support" for years - so sad!Rebuilding seems cheesy to me, though some sort of memorial seems in order.
If the man is rebuilt, do you think that people will still flock to see him?

It does seem silly to try and rebuild it, just live with the memories....

Well, the Old Man will be on our license plates for another 7 or so years. So, he will be remembered. I hope we will move on and rather than rebuild the old icon, the money that would be spent should go towards saving another spot from being taken for a new Home Depot, Wal-Mart, or another 100 McMansions. That would be away to save our state for future generations to enjoy.

Well apparently the governor hasn't said it will be "rebuilt", but that it will be properly "memorialized". That's a good political way of committing himself to nothing specific and I applaud him for being so practical.

What would be the splendor of a man-made formation in it's place? I was sad to hear of that, becuase it looked real neat.
