Do you know if we get a better rate of exchange (change Canadian dollars to Kip) in Bangkok, or wait until we arrive in Laos?

You can only get Kips when in Laos. You can't get kip in Thailand.
I am not really sure if you can change Canadian $ in Laos. I would personally advise you bring US$ and/or Thai Bath.
