I stayed in nearby Puerto Plata,
I loved the Outback Jungle Safari Trip.
Not sure if you there to just party, or there to take in the country.
But they gave us a good tour of DR, mild so families go too.
We had Jessie as our guide and he was a blast, told us all about country and showed us some of main interest there.
Then we also went boogieboarding for one hour.
Not sure if your thing, but we really liked it alot.
THey got a webpage and we paid online ahead and worked so smooth, and we didnt have any problems with our credit card (we do worry bout that thing) later at all.
Just an idea to toss around.

I have a packing list for DR on my page if interested.
(just click on my name if want).

We did go to Sosua, in the daytime it appeared very safe and many Americans and Canadians and Europeans shopping.
I do admit at a store there we got bothered going on streets to buy junk, a no and no eye contact helps.
But with common sense (keep most of your valubables and cash in safe in hotel, with passport and id, we used money belt so no worry where cash was on us too).
We took a calcualtor to go shopping there, helps with pesos to $ conversions.
We looked up daily rate on internet.
Also if travel out take taxi and agree on price before, hotel ususally recommends one. Most people I talked to came in at before dark, so not sure of situation there.
One scam is if your "hire" someone to go out with you, they may only direct you to the store of owner who gives guy a cut, so dont be surprised.
If you speak Spanish, you are already way better off.
Sorry I dont have many Sosua sites, but once again would direct to homepage,
www.debbiesdominicantravels.com

I used that site alot, even had way to find conversion of the peso to $.
Can ask their nightlife and hotspots.

Hi. The Dominican Republic is generally safe outside the resorts. Just use common sense and don't carry a lot of money or jewellery. If possible go in a group or with locals. Night life in the D.R. is good. Clubs and discos offer something for everyone. Cabarete is a hotspot for all activities day and night. The streets are lined with cafes and clubs. Sosua also offers some night life, but you will need transportation to get to these places. The resort will also have a disco but it's much more fun to experience the real thing with the locals as well as tourists. Have a great vacation.
