Mérida Progreso/chicxulub (fly)fishing charters
Posted: Thu October 27, 2005 02:37 PM UTC
All but decided on going to chicxulub/progreso area for vacation in January. The more I read the more intrigued I am by the area. One thing I can't find any info on is fishing in the area. Does anyone have any leads as to what's to be had if anything?
Also, could someone comment on beaches/swimming on the north coast? Wife is concerned as in all the photos we've seen of the beaches (not many!) nobody is in the water!

Fishing is one of the the local industries and tourism is the other, so you could probably find someone to take you out on the water. Progreso is a popular water destination for locals on weekends.

The Gulf in general is deplorably over-fished. Chicxulub is a small town. VERY SMALL. Many of it's inhabitants are subsistence fisherman, we do not need you or for that matter anyone else here fishing for sport and the flagging species in the gulf don't need fishing at all.

Each year for Semana Santa and Summer Vacation Chicxulub PTO is abused by vacationers- predominantly Mexico's richest and most elite. People are mistreated, children are run over- local Maya children mind you, so very little happens legally; South Eastern Mexico is very much like the US' Deep South in many ways.

If you come here to respectfully enjoy the place, for eco-tourism or some such, (hint this does NOT involve DRIVING through delicate ecosystems in a Jeep,) or simply to relax, well I'm not encouraging it, but it's better than showing up as a loud, fat, rude, American Walmart tourist.

If you want a Cancun experience, than go to cancun. And for the sake of the planet don't support cruse lines!

This is not intended as a scathing indictment of you as a person, I don't even know you, but seriously stop fishing, and think about the planet we ALL live on. If you wonder why you should stop fishing just google global fishery populations.

As to the water, it's never 'clear' like the Caribbean. It's a sandy, silty bottom and the high currents make for cloudy water. There are lots of seaweed, sea stings and jelly fish too.

I disagree about the swimming. I swam there this summer and absolutely loved it! The bottom was sandy, the water was warm and calm. I believe it can be quite different during different seasons. I was also there in May and the water was pretty rough. I do love the Progreso area, actually all of the Yucatan. Again, I haven't fished, but I met many fisherman that offered to take us fishing if we wanted to. Your answer was a little uninviting so I just wanted to offer my opinion.
