I have heard a lot of conflicting reports about this place. Some have said it's got really beautiful beaches BUT you are essentially marooned on the property of the (expensive) resort you're staying in because there are NO interesting tourist towns to visit nearby and if you go into the local areas, you will be ripped off on prices, especially if you're a foreigner.
A typical example of China: A lot of the hardware in place but NO software!! I often hear it's "The Hawaii of China" but based on what I've heard from many people that have stayed there, I can say "Please don't compare Sanya to Hawaii!" I have lived in Hawaii and my parents live there now. It is really nice with tons of activities, good dining and shopping and the people will not treat you like s**t to just grab your money. Perhaps the Hainan government can try to change this perception but I honestly believe it is not a priority. I have been to Haikou a couple of times and left highly unimpressed. Luckily I went for work and was not just a tourist, otherwise I would have been very disappointed. Regards...
