| Luang Prabang | Canadians - Do you bring Canadian Cash or US Cash to Laos? Posted: Wed October 26, 2005 05:06 PM UTC
We will be travelling through Thailand and Laos. We were gong to bring Canadian Cash.
Also, can we use our bank cards in Luang Prabang at ATM's? Do you bring your visa card for cash advance at the bank? I believe this is more costly - high service charge - is that correct? Thanks - much appreciated! |

There are NO ATMS in luang Prabang. There is a bank where you can change money-but it is very primitive-people behind a rickety desk with stacks of cash. I don't know if they exchange canadian, I tend to doubt it. I would bring US dollars or Thai baht if you're coming through Thailand.

Make sure you bring enough cash for Laos as there are no ATMs in the country. The only ATMs, lcoated in Vientiane, were not accepting foreign credit cards or debit cards when I visited (Spring 2005).
The best combination for travelling in Laos is to take 1/3 of your money in Thai Bhat and 2/3 in US dollars. The more dollars you exchange the better the rate (ie you get a better rate for exchanging $100 USD then for exchanging $10 USD). You can exchange money at most places, but for the best rates exchange in the large towns (Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Phonsavan, Xam Neua, Savanakhet, etc). Make sure you take enough money to off-the-beaten path places (including Si Phan Don/4000 islands). Saludos, Fernando
