| Pompeii | Pompei and Naples Posted: Mon October 24, 2005 11:25 AM UTC
I am contemplating going to Naples and Pompei from Rome. Can they comfortably be done in a day as an excursion? I want to go to the Archeaological Museum in Naples. Or, should I figure on spending a night?

I would spend a night there, its an awful lot to see on a day trip, I could spend almost a day in Pompei alone
It is do-able I suppose, but it would be an awful rush

I donpt think you can visit both places in just one day. Pompeii closes before sunset, and the museum closes at 7 p.m., I think. You could think of making two day trips, or spend a night in Naples.
Cheers G.

Ciao! The other posters are right - it is possible to do it as a day trip, but difficult if you've never been there before. But dragging luggage and checking in and out of hotels for just one night is time consuming, too. Maybe two nights in Naples? Would give you time to see a few more things. Like Herculaneum.
I've taken friends to Pompei and the Archeological museum as a day trip - but it's a long day. We catch an early train (before 7) to get to Pompeii when it opens. Then back to Naples and take the Metro to the Archeological museum. Then we stop for pizza DOC at one of the famous Naples pizzerias near the train station, either Trianon or da Michele, before the train ride back to Rome. The museum is closed on Tuesday, and closes at 8 p.m. It is spectacular! Not to be missed! Cristina

Many companies do a daytrip. But I have no interest in visiting a Cameo factory like they all do. So, I think I will end up doing 5 nights in Rome and 2 in Naples. I think thats the best bet.

Naples must be seen at night, (check my pics of the seafront in my page).
Anyway, if you really so insist it's doable as a daytrip, but Pompei is a bit of a stretch. Cheers, mac

Danilover is right, once you are that close, you must visit Positano, the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento. I stayed in Sorrento, it's a bit of a tourist trap, but it's also truly incredible and one of my favorite places on Earth. It's only about 30 minutes on the train(a.k.a "Circumvesuvius")past Pompei coming from Naples. Also, I highly HIGHLY suggest that you not rent a car in Naples, driving there is a nerve-racking chaotic mess! Stick with the trains and you'll be fine...oh watch out for guys in the train station wearing blazers who look like they work there and offer to help you out (they should have a name tag or something) they will pretend to help you find your train and demand that you give them money when you get to your terminal...have fun, AND VISIT THE AMALFI COAST!!!!!!

Thank you everyone for your feedback. This is essentially a Rome trip in which Naples and Pompeii would be a sidetrip. A more comprehensive visit to the south will have to wait for some future time. Once again, thanks.
