I wish to find some nice accommodation in Polonnaruwa. I have read reviews of the bigger hotels (e.g. Royal Lotus, Rest house, Sudu Araliya) but they are not very good - the hotels sound tired and the service is bad. I would therefore like to find a nice guesthouse with nice rooms and hot water. Could anyone recommend one?

hi ya Caroline, i've lived in Sri Lanka for years, and was born there. Polunarruwa, is a very anciant old town, the 'big hotels' would be your best bet, as you wont get anything better if you go to a guest house?
there wont be five star service in this part of Sri Lanka. we stayed at a nice guest house... i will check what it was called, and get back to you on wednesday. big rooms, good food, and hot water!

You can find 5 star and very expensive hotels in Polonnaruwa.
Rest house is government own, Sudu Araliya is nice and cheap, Royal Lotus also fine. Polonnaruwa is one of developed area with ancient culture and people. I stay 3 times at Sudu Araliya. If you need further info dont hesitate to contact me. Oscar
