Portimão Visiting Portimao from 21st to 28th October 2005
Posted: Sun October 16, 2005 02:00 PM UTC
Dear VT Members

My wife and I, both in our 50's are visiting the algarve for the first time next week, and would appreciate some tips from those of you who live there, or who have visited the area.

We will hire a Car at the Airport, and we are booked into the Arade Tivoli Hotel , which we understand has its own Beach and Marina

We both like to Eat good food, drink fine wines and we both like Live Music

Any information much appreciated

Regards

...Arade Tivoli Hotel , which we understand has its own Beach and Marina...

Well, the British are the silliest tourists. Private ownership of the seaside in Portugal is just not legal. Normally, this kind of hotels have a direct connection to a PUBLIC beach.

I assume that your hotel is around Portimao (Arade is the name of the local river).
Portimao is very relaxed for middle aged tourists. It is quiet, it has excellent beaches surrounded by beautiful cliffs.
Praia da Rocha is a broad Atlantic beach next to river Arade estuary. On the other side of the river, by Ferragudo, there is an excellent river beach.
Fishing was Portimao's most important industry before tourism. You can try the fish restaurants located by Portimao's river bank. Grilled sardines, served with wine, is the most common dish.
In Praia da Rocha, the are some Irish and English pubs.
