Well, the British are the silliest tourists. Private ownership of the seaside in Portugal is just not legal. Normally, this kind of hotels have a direct connection to a PUBLIC beach.
I assume that your hotel is around Portimao (Arade is the name of the local river).
Portimao is very relaxed for middle aged tourists. It is quiet, it has excellent beaches surrounded by beautiful cliffs.
Praia da Rocha is a broad Atlantic beach next to river Arade estuary. On the other side of the river, by Ferragudo, there is an excellent river beach.
Fishing was Portimao's most important industry before tourism. You can try the fish restaurants located by Portimao's river bank. Grilled sardines, served with wine, is the most common dish.
In Praia da Rocha, the are some Irish and English pubs.
