Any recommendations between the two, and please name your recommended hotels as well. This would be for early October. Thanks in advance.

Hi there. Stayed in Bellagio in July 2000 at the Belvedere hotel. Superb location and great food and service. Be warned, even during the summer, but towns are deathly quiet at night. Bellagio would be the slightly busier of the two. Feel free to check out my travel page on Bellagio!

I stayed in Bergamo and visited Bellagio and Varenna in a day trip last October. Both are very beautiful and very quiet in October. The ferry between the two villages only takes 20-30 minutes so it shouldn't make much difference. I would have thought that Bellagio would be the better village to stay in, probably more to do in the evening and easier to get to Como, Bergamo and Milan. Check out my Bellagio page!
Best wishes, Martin

I stay three days in Varenna last year. A small quite town in view of Bellagio. Easy to reach by train from Milan. The place I stay at was the hotel Eremo Gaudio, http://www.eremogaudio.it. Lovely place on the side of the mountain over looking Varrena. You have to take two elevators up to reach it. Supper and breakfast was great. Room was large, clean and I was lucky to have a great view of Lake Como. I planning to go back to Varrenna in late Sept and hopefully I can stay at the same hotel. I would not stay at Bellagio any place that has a Tiffany jewelry store is town that is to expense for me. Also Bellagio had like 10 or more tourist souvenirs shops, Varenna has none. I still to this day wondering why Bellagio is so special.

I was wondering what would be the best way to get from Malpensa airport arriving at 8:00Am on Sat moring, May 29 to Bellagio. Any suggestions. You mentioned a train-how do I find out the information about that.

Hi,
I've not been to Malpensa airport, however you asked about train information, so I hope that this website might be able to help you:

Most definitely Varenna!! We did spend time in Bellagio and couldn't wait to get back to Varenna for some peace/quite/serenity! We felt that Varenna was more charming, more affordable, and more our pace. We spent our honeymoon in Varenna and were so thankful that we picked this location. We also recommend staying at the Eremo Gaudio (the most spectacular hotel we have stayed in thus far in Italy!). Stay in the Teodolinda Suite with the most spectacular covered terrace!! It is very large with a kitchen, sitting room, comfy king size bed, and huge private terrace! This was the most value for our money - and of course, it's in Varenna.
