| Córdoba | Spanish Lessons in Cordoba Posted: Thu October 13, 2005 04:57 PM UTC
Hi y'all,
I was wondering if anybody has had any experience with Spanish lessons in Cordoba. I'm thinking of staying there for a couple of weeks on my way from Santiago de Chile to Buenos Aires. Is it true that the costs per hour/lesson are a lot higher in Argentina than e.g. Peru or Ecuador? Thanks in advance, Mark |

Just out of curiosity ... why Cordoba? Nothing against Cordoba, but I believe that you will find more options in BA .. and even in Mendoza, wich is still on your way from Santiago and from my point its more "attractive" than Cba.
Cheers, Mac

Mark, there are ads in the Buenos Aires Herald for private Spanish lessons for $25 pesos an hour. There is one teacher I know who will come to your place if you prefer for the same rate. I took a class at one of the more established schools in town 5 hours a day 20 hours for the week and it was 310 pesos or 5.5 pesos an hour. That is pretty cheap as for as I am concerned. They also taught both the Argentine version and the Latin American version of Spanish depending on your destination. My group only had 5 people so it worked out great. Not sure just how cheap you want to get, but otherwise I am with Mac, nothing against Cordoba but if it were me Mendoza would be my choice. May not learn much Spanish except reading the lables of vino tinto, jejejejeje.

Thanks for the replies. To answer the 'why cordoba' question; I often read that Cordoba is a more genuine city in terms of latinamerican culture and atmosphere....Buenos Aires is often referred to as the most European city in South America. Don't get me wrong, I will certainly pay B.A. a visit, but I would prefer learing Spanish in a city where tourists are a less common sight, and local people are more limited in their English. Concerning Mendoza, I've been there 2 years ago, and would therefore rather explore a new city than re-visit the same one.
Saludos, Mark

You have a good point there :) ... even though i dont think Cordoba city look too much as a "latinamerican" city ... but you are right, definitely more than BA. I would recommend you to visit some Jesuits Estancias if you have time.. Santa Catalina and Covadonga are nice. Regarding the Spanish Lessons maybe you can check the UNC (Universidad Nacional de Cordoba) ... Im pretty sure they must have courses there. Then of course studying in Cordoba should be cheaper than BA.
Good luck in your trip .. and with that peculiar Cordobes accent :) Mac

if you want to learn spanish dont go to cordoba, its better to go to buenos aires or if you dont like buenos aires go to rosario, but they have a really really different accent in cordoba, besides is smaller than ba or rosario

This may or may not be a good reason, but a fellow VTer who is in Cordoba now told me that the number and quality of beautiful women in Cordoba, blows away any other place he's ever been to in his life.
It's got my vote. B

Well I know the city very well since I lived there for 4 years ... To be honest the city itself dont even worth a week ... but then you know, those incredible pretty girls .. maybe they worth a moving!! LOL. There are not too many cultural activities, but its nice for hanging out since its a very friendly city. If you are going in the summer beware of the mosquitos .. they are huge, they have fangs and they bite!! LOL .. the most persistent ones I've even seen in my life!!!
I would stay in Cordoba because there's much more things to do there and in the sorroundings .. but then again .. those rosarinas are very tempting! :) Have fun, Mac

Hey Mark I was thinking of doing the same. I have no idea why I picked Cordoba but I thought I would fly there and spend 2 months. One studying SSpanish and the other hanging out, as I am retiring in a few months. When you get back let me know how it was or any recommendations. I would be going in Jan and Feb though probaly not this year. I do a lot of running and biking so check it out and have fun. Beto

check out SET Idiomas. It´s in Cordoba, 4 hours per day, five days a week. They put you up in an apartment with argentines and organize other activities. It´s about U$S 800 per month.
