If he likes Harry Potter, I know he's young but maybe he likes the films, how about Alnwick Castle where it was filmed, not far up the A1. My friend's three year old keeps asking to go back..

Durham Cathedral is also another location for the harry potter films,

As always it depends on the weather if its a crappy day try:
Metroland at the Metrocentre good for kids but not up to much for anyone older.

The Discovery Musium in Newcastle (also its free)

Blue Reef Aquarium Tynemouth.

A nice day

Beamish Musium (but this maybe a little old)
Saltwell park, (gateshead)
Jemond dene (newcasle): also has a pets area.

A Few links for you;

As for eating and stuff,
There is a pub across the road that does better food than the church mouse (the inn keepers lodge) Called the Red Lion. Also a pub on the way into durham at the Arnison centre called Dunelm Ridge this has a kids play area.

Hope this helps.

Enjoy your trip

Regards

Nick
