I am planning to visit Sikkim Jan 06 and curious to know if they do tours to Tsongo lake in Jan or is it too cold.
Being a foreigner would I need a permit for tsongo lake
Can I visit Yumthang from Gangtok in jan

Also planning to visit Peling/Pemayangtse - any hotel recommendations and sightseeing recommandations/day trips

Would appreciate any suggestions/reply.

The lake would be very cold, and frozen (believe me !) in Winter. But subject to good weather, you should be able to make a trip.
You will definitely need a special permit. Also Indians need a permit to go there.
The permit could be obtained from the Sikkim Tourist Offices in India, or some Travel agencies should be able to help you. Remember, you may need some time for the process.I do not remember correctly, but I think there are limited permits for any given day. However, in January it should be no problem.

In Gangtok, I stay in the Hotel Himalayan Heights. A nice hotel, with an off- season discount in Winter.In fact , all hotels should be giving winter discounts.

Also, you could visit Yumthang fom gangtok in Jan. Should be no problem.

1. Can you give me some idea about the winter discount rates of Hotel Himalayan Heights and whether they can be booked in advance?
2. Are you aware of reasonably warm accommodation at Lachung for the Yumthang trip which will be comfortable in December?

At Himalayan Heights , I paid about Rs. 1000 for a double-bedroom/per night. The cost of the same can vary from Rs 1900 - Rs 3500.
Its better to reach there and negotiate, instead of booking over the web.
