Is it ok to live in Praia do Futuro?
Posted: Mon October 10, 2005 01:25 AM UTC
Hi Everyone,

I'm moving with my family to Fortaleza in Nov 2005. I live for the beach and want to be close enough that I can get down there are swim and be home again in 60 minutes or less.

I'm not a sunbather, I just swim. I want to be able to get up from my desk and go for a swim during my work break each day. No taxi rides or 20 min car rides.

From what I can tell, Praia do Futuro seems to be the best beach in the city for swimming so I have been considering finding an apartment there.

However, I've communicated with a few people already in Fortaleza and they advise against it, saying Meireles and the like are better. But I believe the people advising me, may go to the beach once a month, have an icecream, maybe a swim and go home again. Nothing wrong with that and I'm grateful for their advice but I work on a different priority.

I 'need' to swim, daily if possible.

What do you think about Praia do Futuro? Given my wishes and your knowledge of the area, do you think it would be a good place to live?

Thanks for any input you might have.

Murray

Hi, I will quickly add that I have my own Internet biz so I don't need to be near a school or any other place of work.

Hello! =)

First of all, now that you said you have your own internet biz, that changes everything! You could live in Porto das Dunas, have a nice house in that nice place and go to the beach at any moment you with, since it's right in front of the sea.

But the beach in Meireles is NOT good for swimming, Praia do Futuro is!
But Meireles has more... infrastructure than Praia do Futuro... the district ina whole. And Praia do Futuro is not the safest place in the world... =/
Maybe you could live near Praia do Futuro, on Santos Dumont avenue, Dunas district... or near Porto das Dunas... if you don't mind driving some... 7 kilimeters. It's very fast, though!

If you have any other question, feel free to ask! =)

Take care!

Hi Guedes,

thanks for your reply, sorry for not posting sooner but I was expecting to receive email notification a reply had been posted but didn't.

Anyways, what do you know of the area Aldeota, I was told it is about 5km from Futuro and a nice area?

Thanks,
Murray

No problem! =)

Yes, I know Aldota, it's probably the most famous district in Fortaleza...
And yeah, it's pretty nice. It's close to everything and it's not far from Praia do Futuro. But maybe it would be better to live in Papicu, it's between Aldeota and Praia do Futuro and also very nice. =)

If you have more questions, feel free to ask, as many as you want. =)

Take care!

Hi Guedes,

I asked the person helping me find an apartment in Fortaleza about Papicu and they said there is more crime in Papicu than Aldeota. I will be travelling there with my wife and young son, do you think it would be a problem?

Also, are there supermarkets, shops etc in the Papicu area? Why do you think it may be a better area for me than Aldeota?

Thanks,
Murray

Hey! =)

Yes, there's probably more crime in Papicu than in Aldeota, because Papicu is mainly a residential district and the streets are usually empty... but it's a nice place anyway, but since you have a kid, which will obviously want to stay outside and meet other kids, maybe Papicu is not the best place.
But it's closer to Praia do Futuro, and you said you want to live near the beach, so...
Yes, there are supermarkets in Papicu, it's pretty close to Iguatemi (the biggest shopping mall in Fortaleza) and not far from Del Paseo and Shopping Aldeota (shopping malls).

Thanks again,

Although living near the beach is very important to me, it comes second to keeping my family safe.. still.. I appreciate all your suggestions Guedes.

Another question for you:
I will settle for living away from the beach if I can can get there easily, perhaps by my own car.

How much would a cheap car cost?

Thanks,
Murray

Hey! =)

It's not that your family wouldn't be safe, and it's not that Papicu is a very dangerous neighborhood... but it can be risky. And OMG... you were considering living here without having a car...?! hehehe. Well, Fortaleza is not the kind of city where you can do everything by foot, if you know what I mean. =P
And Papicu is not that close from Praia do Futuro, so you would have to go by car anyway. =)
Therefore... it could be better to live in Aldeota! hehehe.

Don't you think you could live in a nice residential neighborhood in Fortaleza, but not far from Porto das Dunas? In my opinion it's much better than Praia do Futuro and you can consider some parts of the beach yours, because there won't be anyone there. hehehe.

A cheap car costs between R$ 10,000 and R$ 20.000. In dollars it's a little less than half the price. =)

Thanks Guedes,

I wonder if I could afford Porto das Dunas.

When you say residential areas nearby Porto das Dunas, which ones do you mean?

And is there shopping in the area or would I need to drive to a different part of Fortaleza?

Thanks,
Murray

Hello! =)

Unfortunately I don't know how much a house in Porto das Dunas costs, BUT there are nice residential areas in Fortaleza on the way to Porto das Dunas where you could live, because they are not far from Aldeota nor from Porto das Dunas. And you can reach both places very fast (by car).
The houses in that area must cost between R$ 100,000 and R$ 200,000, but I'm not sure. "Alagadiço Novo" is the one that I would recommend, but "Lagoa Redonda" has nice houses too, but there are places in Lagoa Redonda that aren't very nice, so it can be risky to buy a house there without seeing it first!

You would need to drive to Iguatemi, but it's on the main avenue in the area (Washington Soares), so you can get there in 5 minutes, depending on the traffic... but I don't think it would take more than 15 minutes to get there.

Hi Guedes,

I'm looking to rent first, not buy.

I plan to spend $600/mth, house or apartment would be fine, just something close to the beach.

I told the people finding my accomodation to look in the Porto das Dunos area and they said their are 3 bedroom apartments with an Internet connection there but I didn't hear the prices.

Do you think I could get something around there, close to the beach for $600/mth?

Thanks,
Murray

600 DOLLARS, right?

Yeah, I really think you can find a nice place for that price...
But it will probably be cheaper... I guess. Actually, I have no idea... hehehe.
But I think it's a good price. =)

So you're sure you want to stay in Porto das Dunas?
The bad thing is that it doesn't have much infrastructure... =T
But like I said, it's pretty close to Fortaleza, I just hope you won't need anything you can't find in Porto das Dunas in the middle of the night. hehe.

Hi Guedes,

my people had a look in Porto das Dunas and it was quite expensive beginning end of November, $600/month is only enough for a small 2 bed apartment. I saw photos of an average looking house and it was $90/day! Also, like you they said there is no infrastructure there, must go to nearest town for shops, banks etc - that won't work for my wife.

So it looks like we are looking in Aldeota again.

Todays questions:
How long would it take to get from Aldeota to the beach in Futuro? How would I get there and what would it cost?

Thanks,
Murray

Hi!

Wow, I didn't know it was THAT expensive!

From Aldeota to Praia do Futuro...? It will depend on the traffic, but I think that in less than 10 minutes you'll be in Praia do Futuro, but I really recommend you to buy your own car and go by car! Believe me, that's the best you can do. Unless you wanna buy a motorbike... =P
Have you seen pictures of Praia do Futuro and Porto das Dunas?
If you find Porto das Dunas nicer, you could live in Alagadiço Novo or Lagoa Redonda!

Hi Guedes,

this trip is getting more expensive all the time. The only apartment my people could find that fit my requirements (internet, 3 bedroom, security, safe area etc) is $1500/mth although they bargained it down to $888/mth, I could get a 3-bed in Japan for that much.

Add on a car and that's an expensive 6 month holiday. Anyway, I'm still coming.

You said earlier a used car would cost about $6000 I think. If I bought a car it would have to be something cheaper. I only have so much in savings, it will cost me US$6000 just for the plane tickets from Japan, add on getting set up in apartment and so on and I may not be able to scrape together another $6k for a car.

What about a cheapo car, what do you think I could get for US$1000-$2000? It would need to be big enough for 2 adults and a baby seat.

Thanks as always,
Murray

Hi!

$888 is almost the half, of course they were trying to take advantage when they said the price was $1500! You could get a 3-bed in Japan for that much?? hehehehe! $1500 a month isn't THAT much...! =)
BUT! Are you SURE they said DOLLARS?! Maybe that's the price in Reais, which in dollars means less than half!

You're gonna stay for 6 months? Then you would sell the car, wouldn't you?
So you shouldn't worry SO much about how much you'll pay for the car, because you'll probably get at least 90% back!

But for $6000 you would be buying a cheap car! hehehe.
Unless you buy a second hand not-so-good car, like a Fiat Uno Mille...
I don't know how much it costs, but I REALLY doubt you can find one for less than $3000! =/

Btw, you're in Japan? Where are you originally from? And what are you doing in Japan? And why are you moving to Fortaleza? hehehehe.

=)

Hi Guedes,

sounds like second-hand cars are expensive in Brazil. Japan is the most expensive country in the world but good used cars can be found cheap, much cheaper than $6000. My current car, a luxury model 4wd turbo deisel toyota light-ace in excellent conditon cost me less than $4000 from a dealer.

I presume when you say $6000 for a cheap car you mean US dollars.

The apartment is 2000 reais which is roughly US$888.

I'm Australian and my wife is Japanese. We drove around Australia for 16 months and 41,000 kms. A month after completing that we bought a round-the-world ticket; went India, Phillipines, Japan - next stop was NY on American Airlines but terrorists attacked. We cancelled ticket and stayed in Japan for 4 years, we had a child and I built my business.

Now we're ready to continue our adventure, we are both interested in Brazil for its beaches, weather and people so here we come. That's us in a nutshell.

What about you, why do you speak such good English?

Hi, Murray,

Yes, they are pretty expensive... probably because of all taxes... =/
Wow, your car was pretty cheap!!

Yes, I mean US dollars. Why, is that good or bad? =P hehe.
Where is the R$ 2000 apartment located?

Your story is very interesting, your life must be a big adventure! =P

My English? Good? Thanks... hehehe. Well, I've practiced a lot... writing, reading, hearing... There's always something to learn from movies, songs, articles on the internet... =) Forums...! =P Everything!

Ana Bilhar...? That's in Meireles, and it's the most expensive distrixt in the city! It's 3 blocks away from Beira Mar avenue (beach), not so close to Praia do Futuro... but close to shops and everything else!

I think you can find a cheaper place that has also a good location, and is closer to Praia do Futuro! Maybe they are trying to offer you the most expensive appartments...!

Hi!

Maybe you should try to find a house again, or an appartment closer to Porto das Dunas (or Praia do Futuro)... I think they were offering you the most expensive houses. I think R$2000/month is very expensive, a friend of mine said that in Porto Alegre a small furnished apartment in a nice neighborhood costs between 300 and 1000 reais... I don't think Fortaleza is so much more expensive than Porto Alegre, if it is more expensive!

Hi Guedes,

we will choose somewhere near Meireles, Iracema or Aldeota I think.
Everywhere else is either not safe or not close to shopping (my wife
wants shopping).

If you can, please tell me about these 2 addresses, are they good locations:
-Rua Ana Bilhar 867/1102, Meireles
-Edifício Dragão do Mar, Rua Tomáz Lopes, 200 - Praia de Iracema

Hi,

I am Norwegian. This Summer me and my husband visited Brazil and Fortaleza for the first time. We spent many days out at Praia Futuro, It was really nice there. We rented a car and went to other places as well. At last we bought a house at wonderful Porto Das Dunas. Since they have no built a bridge connecting Praia Futuro with Porto Das Dunas, it will not take you much time to go from Fortaleza out to Porto Das Dunas.
My house is soon ready with new furnitureand ready for renting. I will not be back until July, I suppose, but I am really looking forward to it. It is a wonderful place.
I envy you somehow, who are going to live there.
I need someone to trust there, someone who speaks English.
