San Pedro de Atacama Is San Pedro de Atacama worth it?
Posted: Sat October 8, 2005 10:24 AM UTC
Hi everyone,

I am travelling to Chile for about 2 weeks in January. I will basically be heading from Santiago to Puerto Montt during that time. However, I was thinking about taking advantage of Lan Chile's Air Pass offer and heading up to San Pedro de Atacama for 3 days just to check it out. I am wondering if it is worth the extra time and money, i.e. if it is a place to check out only if you happen to be in the area, or if it is a place worth making an extra journey to see. Would my time be better spent down south exploring more of that area or is San Pedro & vicinity a "must see"?

Thanks for any advice!

I personally loved San Pedro but it depends what you're looking for. It's a really cute city and there's lots to do. There's also a big difference in the land of the north than in the south (obviously, San Pedro is in a desert) which might be interesting to check out. I'm not sure what your plans are and what you would be giving up seeing in order to check out San Pedro so I can't say for sure...

All I will really be giving up is 3 or 4 more of my 2006 vacation days and the extra cost to get and stay there, since I have decided to keep with my current plan in the south and then hang San Pedro on at the end if I decide to go. Of course that also means 3 or 4 fewer days on my next vacation, but seeing as I will be in the "neighborhood" it might be rude not to stop by and see San Pedro :o)

I was there lst week for 5 days. The south of chile is very nice. but I think a visit to san pedro de atacama is worthwile. I can take at least 3 excursions, and they are not so expensive, if you shop around. unfortunately the people there are not very honest and they try to cheat. I do not recommend the TATIO HOTEL AND NEITHER THE AGENCY COSMO ANDINO. THEY TRY TO CHEAT. DO NOT RESERVE A HOTEL TROUGH THE INTERNET, AS THEY ASK FOR A DEPOSIT AND THE YOU GET THE WORST.
you can just go there and find a very good acommodation for around 40 us dolar.
