Guinea Malaria

I am planning a business trip to Conakry and would like to hear about the recent situation with malaria there. If we are coming for a week and planning to stay at the capital, do we need propxylactics?

My travel health site says for Guinea: HIGH risk of Malaria in the whole country (inclusive cities) during the whole year.
Prevent with repellents, long clothes at dawn.
Malaria prophylaxis:
take Mefloquin (LARIAM® / MEPHAQUIN®), or Atovaquon + Proguanil (MALARONE®) or Doxycyclin (Monohydrat)
Don't forget to start before you go.

Hi,

My wife is currently in Conakry and has mentioned that the rainy season appears to be nearly over, which would mean a diminished threat of malaria. Conakry is not generally a high-risk zone for malaria. Nontheless, you should consult with a doctor at your local health clinic about what shots are recommended for the time of year that you are travelling. When I travelled to Conakry in late March this year I was required to have a yellow-fever shot. You'll have to include your immunization certificate (yellow card) with your passport when you mail your visa application to the Guinean Embassy in D.C. Make sure you take this card with you when you travel to Guinea (the stamp indicating that you've had your Y.F. shot will be located on the back of your immunization certificate). You will not be allowed to enter the country without proof of having had the yellow fever shot. The following shots are recommended though not required: Hepatitis A, meningitis, typhoid and tetanus (not sure if a polio shot is a must). Mind you, getting all these shots can get expensive. So, check to see if your local county or University have clinics that offer cheaper travel shots. Insurance normally does not cover the latter. Hope this helps.

- MD.

Sorry, I would definitely take Doxycyclin as the second post states. It is recommended regardless of the threat level in that part of Guinea. Though, yellow fever is definitely required.
