LOT Polish Airlines
Posted: Thu September 19, 2002 11:50 PM UTC
Please excuse the "airline" post.

I got a cheap one-way quote for March 19, 2003 for
$506 USD (including taxes) from San Antonio, Texas
(USA) to St. Petersburg, Russia (connecting at NYC's
JFK and Warsaw) with Lot Polish. Question is, I have
no clue on this airlines. Any experience with the
airline?

Keep in mind, it's dirt cheap (less than what other
airlines had quoted for on the round trip from
Houston!), so i'm not expecting luxury... as long as
they get me and my luggage in one piece i'll be happy.

I'll apreciate any comment.

Also (and of equal or more importance), is it easy to
get into Russia with a one way ticket? I'm flying in
to St Pete and exiting via the Trans-Mongolian.

cheers,
Fernando

.
A lot of info (14 transportation tips) about LOT Polish Airlines you can find in my Poland page - it's quite good and comfortable airline (the best in east and central Europe) with new planes (Boenings 767 and 737 mainly) and very friendly staff.
.
READ OTHERS OPINIONS and comments in LOT public forum:
http://kudos.goldenware.com/f/LOT_Polish_Airlines
.
Check www.lot.com
.
LOT (means in Polish language flight) has code-shareware agreements with
Lufthansa in Europe and American Airlines in USA/Canada.
Any more questions? Just ask - it's my great pleasure to help my friends.
Greetings from Poland.
Matt.

And one more - why is LOT so cheap? Is it possible without decreasing the quality?
.
Yes, it is in my opinion. First: LOT doesn't spend much money for promotion, commercials etc.
Second: salaries of LOT employees are much lower then in other airlines, they are high only if you compare them to average Polish salary (average salary i Poland is about 400 Euro/USD netto a month). So, even relatively to well known airlines salaries motivate employees very much. Very many Poles would like to get a job in LOT.

Hi Fernando,

I flown with the LOT from Katowice to Warszawa and Frankfurt in Dec 2001. I actually had much better service than when I took Singapore Airline (supposedly one of the best). I am also very impressed by the landing skills of the pilot considering the condition at that time. Poland was having the coldest winter since 1978, it was snowing heavily and the ground was covered with ice. I was supposed to fly with Lufthansa but they cancelled the flight because of the snow.
Don't worry too much and enjoy your trip. :)

I bought the ticket :)

I took your advice and did it!

I'm flying San Antonio to Warsaw (via NYC-Newark), staying 3 weeks in Poland, and then on the St Pete, Russia... one way, all for $482.70!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fly out on March 19, 2003 arriving same day in Warsaw, Poland.... have 3 weeks to see Poland and get my Russian visa there in person. Then, from Warsaw, fly out to St Pete on April 9th!

Can you believe it! Even less than the direct SAT to St Pete flight!!!!

cheers,
Fernando

LOT has five 767s for its longhaul routes. I should imagine that the aircraft are equipped with the usual entertainment facilities (inflight movies and music channels) that are standard features on long flights nowadays.

Thanks for all of your kind replys :).

I bought the ticket at www.lot.com (they have a 5% discount if purchased online from US).

My plans are to see as much as Poland as I can in the 3 weeks i'll be there. Then i'll go to Russia for 2-3 months. I'll be hopping on and off along the Trans Siberian, then Trans-Mongolian train until I get to Mongolia... from there i'll go to China. There is where my trip is a bit hazzy as of late... not sure what i'll do from there: either Tibet, Nepal, India and Sri Lanka "OR" SEA.

cheers,
Fernando

Go and have fun! I have flown LOT 3 times Chicago to Warszawa [Warsaw to you non Poles] and it has been excellent each time! If you have time be sure to see Krakow, the "Most Beautiful Medieval City in the World!"

booked online directly with the airline at www.lot.com. They have or had a 5% discount online for US web users. Give it a try.
