Haifa...nightlife, culture?? Where is it? Posted: Sun October 2, 2005 04:55 PM UTC
Hi, I'm a 29 yr old single english male who has been offered a position outside of Haifa.
I am currently living in tel aviv. I recently went to haifa to see what it was like and whether I could live there, and I found it very very quiet.
I went to Merkz Carmel and I think I counted 4/5 bars/pubs. Not very much. OK, I won't be going out every night and there's only so many bars/ pubs you need but there seems to be very little energy/ excitement expecially for single people in their late 20's.
A few people have told me that there are more cafe's bars in Hadar and the German Colony is this true? Are there young israelis who go out? Or are they all studying really hard at the Technion??

While Haifa is not Tel-Aviv, the nightlife improved quite a lot in the last years. Along Moriah street you will find several pubs. From the top of my head I can think of Barbarosa (a littel below Horev center), The Duke, Maidler, The Irish pub at Yefe Nof st., Rojo right next to the Irish pub, Hotentot in Hadar, Brown, the Godfather near the port, Kalman a little further away, Ha-Ogen (the anchor) in the lower city. There are places in the German colony too, but as far as I remember it is more a cafe and bistro area and not so much a pubs one. Also, you can go to places around Haifa for more. Like the Hobit in Zikhron Yaakov.

One place I forgot about is "The Bear" in Merkaz Hacarmel. I didn't like it that much myself, but some people I work with (I live in Tel-Aviv but work in Haifa) claim it's the best one.

This is Merkaz Hacarmel. Sderot Hanasi is the continuation of Moriah. There are pubs along the entire street, starting with the Irish pub and ending with Barbarosa. I don't remember where exactly the name chnages, but you can consider it as one street. BTW, "The Bear" is right across the street from the auditurium, at the corner of Sderot Hanasi and Wedgwood street.

So, I moved in the end. Yes, now that I'm here there is more than I first thought, kind of like Jerusalem in all the bars being clustered in one area(along Moriah Street). No, its definitely not Tel Aviv but I hope It will work for me. Just need some friends now!!

Hey Rysk,
The nightlife in Haifa is not that bad...certainly not as good as Tel-Aviv...but there are still some bars and clubs that are rather good. Hopefully, this will help you if you are still living in Israel.
Cheers,
Alex
