| Saint Lucia Island | Drugs Posted: Sun October 2, 2005 03:24 PM UTC
I have heard that this area (Saint Lucia) is a stop over point for Drugs. I have two teenage children whom I know will be wanting time on their own and am not naive to think that they might explore and perhaps tempted by pot, weed or whatever. Will they see this and what is the policy on drugs in general.

I'm not an expert on this, but I've visited most Caribbean Island, and more specifically, spent some time in St. Lucia last year.
Some types of drugs are transported thru the Islands from South America. However, other drugs are grown in some of the Islands, as they are in Mexico, Hawaii and even the Continental US. On some islands, they would be much more exposed to drugs than on others. My 12 year old son said he was offered drugs in Jamaica on four occassions - during a one day port stop during a cruise. However during 4 days in St. Lucia last year, I did not observe any use of drugs - as happens on some islands. Drugs are illegal in all of the Islands of the Caribbean. However, the penalties for possession vary - in some cases the penalties are much more extreme than they are in the States. It would be wise to find out the from reliable sources what the penalties for possession are in St. Lucia - and be sure to share that information with them before you go.

Hello,
I too, am no expert...But wanted to share that, unlike the last person that responded, I was approached and offered drugs several times while visiting St. Lucia. The island, in my experience was extremely safe, friendly, and beautiful, but that is not to say that your teenagers won't have ample opportunity to experiment, should they want to. I think it also depends how apt you are to exploring off the beaten path. Obviously, activity around the resorts would be far and few between, but I'm the type of traveler that likes to get out of the resort and see more of the destination. The more locals I met, and more "public" places I went to, the more offers I received. stephanie
