Wellington Weather Question
Posted: Sat October 1, 2005 08:49 PM UTC
I am coming to visit my son in Wellington in late October and early November for 12 days. I know it's spring there now (almost?) and I am wondering what the average daytime and night time weather will be? My son moved there in May so nstead of trying to get him to answer me, I was wondering if some of you might give an idea on the weather, and how to dress for it. Springtime in the United States is shorts weather, but I was looking at some weather charts and averages and it appears that Wellington and surrounding area might be cooler like maybe late 50 degrees to early 60's. Any help/advice would be appreciated. I'm flying there three weeks from today and am trying to get a handle on things:) Thanks, Justinsmom

Wellington Weather Question

It's just so changeable, you have to be prepared for anything. 4 seasons in one day. sorry, but this is the case. It can whip up a very cold wind in Wellington so a good windproof jacket is essential. Layers are best, so you can mix your layers to suit. eg it may be windy and wet but warm. or windy and wet and very cold!
You may also get some really nice warm weather, even hot middle of the day. But it's just so changeable then.
You'll have a nice time. anyway if it gets really cold while you are there, you can buy some thermal underwear which is really good here in NZ. Merino garments are superb. and at that time of year they will be on sale. These items (if needed) are warm and small to pack. Great for future travelling.
Enjoy Windy Welly!! it's a fun city.
regards, Pam :-)

Thanks Pam. I knew about the four seasons in one day, but I thought that maybe once spring arrived that the four seasons wasn't as much of a factor. Good grief!! I will prepare. So I guess we're saying not to think we'll be wearing shorts in late October early November. Am looking forward to seeing your beautiful country!!

jdp, are you toting for Australia or do you just realise that New Zealand and Australia are two different countries LOL ;-) and with NZ being a Pacific Island nation the weather is vastly different to that of continental Australia.

Of course it is nicer to hear from the natives, but fyi on weather.com it shows the averages in Wellington for October to be a high of 57 and low of 49 and for November a high of 60 and low of 51... I find that layering is always the best answer. Make sure you always have a light jacket in the car to throw on in case it gets cold! I've been in Melbourne, Australia (from Texas) since April and still haven't really gotten a nice warm shorts day! *sigh* I am looking forward to summer! Have a great trip!
