How easy/difficult is it to go from Uxmal to Campeche after visiting ruin? Is it better to go back to Merida?

Thank you for your answers.

Proably best to go via Merida as most buses stop there.

Campeche is a small enough place, wouldn't be worth spending more than a night there unless you have something special going on there.

There are lots of buses, though you might find yourself having to take a rustic second class bus. I do not know if first class buses will stop on their way to Campeche, though I expect some would. If I recall correctly, the ruins are a ways from the highway, but it is not too much to walk; but I could be wrong. You could leave Merida early and visit the ruins (2-5 hours depending on the number of pyramids you climb and the pictures you take)and then catch a bus. Another option would be to stay overnight at Uxmal. This would get you a sunrise, sunset and the highly recommemded "Sound and Light Show" (I have not seen it myself.)
You do not need to take a tour to get to Uxmal, but there are a lot of interesting sites including ruins, caves, a great restaurant and old hemp haciendas in the area which can make for a good circular tour. It probably would not be worth the trouble to have the tour bus leave you off where you could catch a bus because the furthest point toward Campeche would probably be reached only half way through the tour.
I usually do not recommend car rental by tourists to Mexico, but I have made exceptions for places like the Yucatan where roads and traffic are reasonable and having a car can allow you to see so much more. Some of the smaller places are as rewarding to visit as the larger more famous sites. Many years ago I visited hopping on and off small buses, but on my last visit I was with a group and we rented a van for a Merida to Merida loop. This was great because not only did we see Uxmal conveniently, but I could see some places off the beaten track I had not seen before. Plus we did not have to spend time waiting for the next bus.
I doubt whether you can rent a car for drop off in Campeche and if was possible it would probably prohibitively expensive. Personally, I would not rent a car to go on to Campeche and then return it to Merida, because I do not like the worry of having to park and protect it. Of course, I could eliminate some of this worry by staying in hotels with safe parking, but I am too cheap for that.
I hope this helps you have a great trip, bob.
