Trondheim Christmas in Trondeim?
Posted: Tue September 27, 2005 12:37 PM UTC
howdy folks!

We have never been to Norway but have decided to this christmas. Current schedule allows us to spend a couple of nights in Trondheim as part of our travels and we chosen to do this on 24th / 25th December.

Hotel is booked (Britannia) which includes breakfast, however they have advised their restaurants will be closed...

Is it likely that we will find shops / restaurants open on 24th / 25th or do you suggest we fill our bags with food on the 23rd on the way down from Narvik?

It would be great if someone could give me an idea of what to expect during the Christmas period.

Many thanks!

Go to Røros instead - that's a winter place, easily reachable from Trondheim and makes a point out of being a christmassy town. And Risberg will be applauding me on this: you should go there by train from Trondheim. Ensure that you have reserved seats on all long-distance trains during the Christmas period. If in Trondheim, make sure that you go to christmas mass in the Nidaros cathedral, whether a believer or not.

Ok thanks for the info I will have a quick read up on Røros.

plan so far.

Train Stockholm to Kiruna
1 night
Train kiruna - Narvik
Flight Narvik - Bodo
2 night
Flight Bodo - Trondheim
2 night - how far is Røros? I will look now
Flight Trondheim - Bergen
1 night
Train Bergen - Oslo
1 night
Flight Oslo - Stockholm
1 night

I hate to be taking so many flights instead of train but we dont have enought time and they are cheaper. On the basis we see what we like we can always come back next year and spend more time there.

Thanks!

Got the train up to narvik via kiruna booked and also the flight from bodo to trondheim booked so....no chance of changing im afraid :( I'm sure it will be alright though :-)

We will not be in Bodo long, arriving eve of 22nd and flying out early 24th. so chance to fill our bags at supermarket and prepare for the xmas lockdown in trondheim :) Also got a voucher for the radisson there so nice hotel / very cheap price.

Putting that to the side.

Trondheim onwards.........

I think the trip to Roros might be a bit out of the way as we are going to have to go back on ourselves a little as we need to get back to trondheim really and remember time is short. Therefore my crazy proposal is this...

*** Fixed ***

20 arrive stockholm - overnight train to kiruna
21 stay in icehoel
22 train to narvik then flight down to Bodo
23 day in Bodo Flying out early on 24th
24 Trondheim
25 Trondheim

*** Flexible ***

26 overnight train to oslo then get 8am (27th) train to Bergen,
27 Afternoon / evening in Bergen then get overnight train to Oslo
28 Spend day in Oslo and then get overnight train to Stockholm
29 Spend morning in Stockholm then fly home

3 consecutive nights on the train to end the trip... bad idea?
Looking at 2 person compartment but intrigued what economy class seats are like for maybe the trip out to bergen. What is the Knee room like Im quite tall..

Actually the whole compartment thing confuses me. 2 persons and then you have to select family right as otherwise we will be split up? Doesnt make much sense to me but hey!

Cant find a site that shows prices for overnight train oslo to Stockholm. seems like they dont like doing cross border single tickets? If you have any suggestions that would be appreciated.

so what do you think about the last half of the trip? Am I mad :D

Are you planning on flying from the local airport in Narvik (NVK) or the larger Evenes Airport (EVE)? Be warned that the flight from NVK is on a small unpressurized plane with 18 seats. I doubt it will be full, but you might get cheaper flights on more comfortable planes from EVE, although you will have to spend about an hour on the Airport Bus getting there from Narvik.

Although I've never attended it myself (this year perhaps?)from what I hear, Christmas Mass in the Nidaros Cathedral is something special, at least by Norwegian standards, but perhaps not if you're used to large American churches. If you choose to attend, you should get there well in advance though.
