Is there any flights between the two destinations? If not, what is the recommended mode of travel and how much? Anyone know the approx distance? How long via bus, flying or driving a rental car?

I dont think there is a direct flight between the 2 places you have mentioned. You may come down to Hat Yai and from there, take a direct bus to Ipoh. It will take you around 10-12 hrs, if I am not mistaken.

From Ipoh u have 2 choices :
1)Train to haadyai via Butterworth -abt 15hrs 2)Direct bus from Ipoh to haadyai.abt 8-10hrs From haadyai ask locals...I can't remember but there are alot of shared vans/taxi or bus to jetty for u to board a ferry to Koh samui. Good luck.
