We are thinking of coming to Maderia August 06 and staying at the Maderia Regency Palace , can anyone help with the hotel, what is it like, how far from the centre, is it in a hilly situation. Will there be enough to do for a fortnights holiday

As it happens we are the same age so I'll assume we pretty much like the same things. The Regency Palace should be fine but take a look at www.tripadvisor.com for some comments by people who have stayed there. I stayed in Funchal for 10 days in November and had no trouble filling the time although I was there in a party of four and we did hire a car for a few days to see a bit of the island, which is very beautiful but quite mountainous. In November we had good enough weather to be in shorts and swim in the hotel pool. Madeira offers wonderful walks along its lavadas (miles and miles of irrigation canals). In Funchal we found some very pleasant restaurants and there is also a casino. If you are a soccer fan check out if Maritimo are playing at home; we were lucky to see them play Benfica. Prices seemed very reasonable.
