Hi all,
Im traveling to Meteora and was wondering if its possible to walk between monasteries to see them on foot at all? How long would the walks take? Also, how do I get to Meteora from Olympia the fastest? Thank you! |

Yes, you can walk. It's faster and more convenient by car, but not impossible to cover all monasteries on foot. Just allow yourself enough time - at least one day.

There is a bus to the monasteires from Kastraki. This is the village below Meteoras.
Once there you can go to one monastery to another by feet. Only two of them are quite far. I don't remember its names. The nicest one is Roussanou. I walked to the monasteries fro Kastraki by foot. It was a very long walk. See my Meteora travelogue on my Greece pages if you like.

I too walked form town (in March), it was a cool but sunny day. I was going to take the bus up, then walk, but either missed the bus or it wasn't running that early in the season. If you're in 1/2 decent shape it's a great way to spend the day!

Thanks so much, I guess we can walk no problem then.
Does anyone know how to get from Olympia to Meteora the fastest? Is there a night bus? Thanks!

We were pressed for time so asked the young lady at our rooming house about walking and she told us of a path that went through the woods to the grand meteora past a couple of others (one a ruin). We caught a taxi to the grand meteora (5 euro). At the small stairs leading up to the door in the side of the rocks look to your left and you will see a small trail. Follow it. You will not be dissapointed! This was the way the monks went prior to the building of paved roads. Spectacular! It is steep and rocky in places but not treacherous. My daughter was wearing flip-flops and made out fine. Lots of trees and bushes, wild turtles, and some huge trees and grand views.
