I am trying to convince Jojocan to keep one of those adorable foster pups on her pages ..... she likes the one who looks most like a bear. I thought that if we could virtually name her pup, it would be easier for her to keep it :)

So, what is the word for bear in your country / native tongue / language?

She's asleep right now - so don't tell her I'm asking you this, Okay? We wouldn't want to spoil the surprise ......

How about "Teddy"?

In Maltese it is Ors. Perhaps "Ursus" would be Kool.

In Australian it is Ummm...Bear!!...I know ...how about "Cuddly"

Or "Grizzly!" or...."Bearrrd-dog" :o)

I think Tina's "Koala" must be on your definate choice list.

In Norwegian (also danish & sweedish) it is bjørn :)
Bjørn -> ø = ö = oe -->> Bjoern
Bjørn is also a (WILDly) used name for males in Norway. Have one uncle Bjørn :)

Just to throw a spanner in the works, I think that strictly speaking our Koala is not a bear ! From a zoological point of view I think it'a a marsupial ! Cousin to the wombat.. I also know that they can give you a very nasty bight with blunt teeth. Built for crushing leaves. Been on the receiving end !
But we always refer to them as a Koala bear, it sounds better..
The noise when they are mating is horrifying. An awful very loud barking grunt and the mating squeal. Very surprising if you aren't expecting it in the middle of the night !! ;-)) Laurie.

I suppose you could call it the Great Australian BITE !! Duhhh.
Also you don't call it anything you've got to go and get it..

Well, we can't use Ursus ... my critter is Ursa and that's just tooooo close! Koala sound too cuddly for Jojo. BUT, with the extra killer koala info provided she might choose that one :) bjoern ...(Sorry can't do the cool thingy w/ to o) ..... I like that one myself! I never knew one of my favorite shoe brands was named for bear/man!

So much to consider! I wonder when Jojo will wake and find this thread .....

How about Dooh? There is the cutest little bear at the sanctuary with our baby Mian called Dooh and he is so gorgeous, with incredible attitude.

OK, another name I like is Winston.

Mind you Kymba, remember how much grief her neighbours gave her girls? I don't think she'll keep another puppy, love them as she does, I think she'd rather play foster mum and make sure they're ok. She wants to go and do things like visit me in Phuket - which she can't do with a puppy - she's too good-a mother.

We don`t have real bears nowadays but the stuffed type we have plenty of. So heres a list of my kids bears names.

I know .... this is more of a tease :) She doesn't want another dog until she gets an indoor one! But the middle pup is just too cute not to THINK about it don't you think??? AND being a good foster mum, she's named all her other temp 'children' in the past - even that one who ate part of the wall!

FYI - if she's too busy to meet up w/ you in Phuket, I will volunteer to go in her place ... after all ... what are friends for??

Laurie, I hope you haven't got any great surprises from koalas? You can't stay at those cheap motels by animal havens anymore. You shouldn't be so cuddly!

I just got an email from her stating she was "NOT" keeping the puppies. Too much after losing Molly and Rosie, in which she further states, "They will always be my dogs, ya know"?
