cheapest way to rent a car
Posted: Thu April 24, 2003 02:56 PM UTC
Hey everyone!
End of June I'll be in NYC, and plan to do some camping upstate. Does anyone know where I should rent a car if I want the cheapest rate. I'll need one for approx. 10 days.

Renting a car in NYC or tri-state metro area is very expensive. We're blessed to be charged higher rates then other parts of the US. You're best bet is to take the train or bus to a large enough city in NY state and rent a car there. I'd recommend Poughkeepsie, Kingston or even Albany. Just do a web search for those cities, you'll find quite a few companies in any of those places.

Thanks Sue,

We rented one in New Jersey last time, but it was over US$300, for only three days. I will check out those places you mentioned.

No problem, also remember that often it is cheaper to rent a car in weekly slots then daily so it might be less expensive to rent a car for 2 weeks rather than 10 days.

If you catch a commuter train to Poughkeepsie(east bank of the Hudson River), the station is in the middle of town just under the MidHuson Bridge. I did a quick search on the major rental agencies. Most show up a few miles south of the station. You will want to get a cab since large sections of Rte 9 are sidewalk free. Feline is correct on the leasing costs. Plus driving out of Poughkeepsie will be easier than exiting the city. Directly across the Hudson river is the Catskills. North on the thruway (Rte 87 leads north to the Adirondacs. Happy camping!

Also, it's *much* cheaper to rent from the area airports than from any city location. I've often resorted to taking the AirTrain out to Newark Int'l and renting from there, where several of the major national chains are competing with each other. Of course, it's also always much cheaper to pickup on the weekend than during the week.

Hi Aukje,

As I see you are from the Netherlands. In my experience it's much cheaper to rent the car from Europe than in the US.

Try the following link
www.holidayautos.de
they also have a dutch site.

Always book the cheapest car. Normally in the states the have very few of that category and there is a good chance that such a car is not available when you arrive over there. They try to convince you that a bigger one would be better because you have so much luggage and so on. But insist in the small one. After some discussion they give you a bigger one for the price of the economy-car.

Enjoy NY
