Prefecture of Heraklion One day in Heraklion
Posted: Wed September 14, 2005 08:01 AM UTC
I'm going to a meeting in Heraklion in late September.I'm staying at Galaxy Hotel, what's it like? But question is that I have one day in Heraklion before the meeting and would be thankful if you could give me hints about what to do? Stay in town, take a bus and see the Island, shopping, museums....

I know it's only a day and there's lot to see and do, but....

Also comments about nice restaurants are wellcome=)

Thanks!

Hi I have not been in Heraklion yet but I plan to be there end of September too and inquired a bit - if you only have one day you might go to visit the famous Knossos which is a unique site - Have fun - Mary

If nothing else go see Knossos. It is only about 5kms from city center. Don't take a cab, they charge far too much. There is a bus from downtown Heraklion (a block up from the harbour, near the old fountain) for next to nothing. They drop you right off at the gate of the complex.

Heraklion itself is nothing special at all. In fact, it is a rather dirty, congested place. If I were you I would see Knossos (just take the bus) and the archeological museum (which is in the eastern part of the old city). You can easily fill most of a day doing those two things, leaving a little time to stroll around and see what little Heraklion itself has to offer.

Definitely the archaeological museum - it contains beautiful Minoan artefacts from palaces like Knossos, including wonderful wall paintings. Knossos too - try to get there as early as possible, or very late on in the day as it gets so crowded.

Heraklion isn't a picture postcar pretty town like many others on the island. It takes a while to get to know and love it. Apart from the museum, I would recommend the market and the square around Ay. Titos church where there are a couple of good bars and simple food places. There are some lovely churches, a good market and great nightlife.

Archanes is a good bet to visit as a typical Cretan village, as it is not too far away and has very regular bus service from Heraklion.
Look at the timetable on KTEL website

Departs from harbour area

I don't know that you've got time to do all that in one day though.
