Whistler When is there the best snow at Whistler/Blackcomb? Or when is it not raining?
Posted: Sun September 11, 2005 05:51 PM UTC
I have always wanted to visit and ski Whistle/Blackcomb. Although I understand it's a great ski area, I understand that there can be many times when it's raining at the lower lifts, and snowing at the top. Is there any month or period in which you're not going to get rain at the lower elevations? Or, is there always a chance for rain no matter when you go? I've been wanting to ski here for many years, and maybe this year I'll try to finally visit, but I am hoping there might be a time in the ski season when it is least likely to rain at the lower elevations, if even such a period exist. Thank for your help.

Always a chance of rain at Whistler the last five years, although, generally the weather is good above mid station. Not many green runs up there except for a couple of long, slow, thigh burners. But great for intermediate or better. We've ski'ed there a dozen or so days and really only remember two really good ones. Have encountered rain several times and brutal white outs above mid station. A nice day at Whistler is hard to beat but it's a crap shoot. Overall, the interior mountains have great terrain, more reliable snow and decent villages. SunPeaks in Kamloops, is steep, dry and sunny. Silver Star has a western style village, lot's of terrain and powdery snow. Big White is huge with oodles of fast quads taking you to all kinds of terrain, from glades, to bowls to fields of snow ghosts to big tree lined runs. They're range from 3.5 to 5 hours from Vancouver.

As noted in the previous post the resorts in the BC interior tend to be more predicatable. For Whistler try January to avoid rain . The rain is more of a drizzle and occurs on the lower 1000 ft. Stay in Blackcomb Village , where you are higher up the mountain. March seems to bring heavy snowfalls. Deep and heavy powder. I like it that way . WET. You are completely zonkered by the end by the day.

hi
You really can't predict the weather here on the west coast. Even the weatherman/woman is wrong many many times. Even on days that start out clear and beautiful, it might cloud over and rain by afternoon. The interior mountains generally have better softer snow, and less rain. Big White, Sun Peaks, Silverstar are all good suggestions to check out.
I prefer Blackcomb to Whistler, but they are both great mountains to ski or snowboard. I would just pick a time, come to Vancouver, and see what the forcast looks like, and then if its looking good for weather and snow conditions, head up there. I suggest not going between Christmas and New Years, as its always craaazy busy there. If the forcast isnt looking too good for Whistler, then head to one of the other ski resorts in the area.
