As for public transport getting there, that depends on where you are coming from. Most people probably travel there from Hat Yai, which is about an hour away. Should be very easy to find a bus going there.

Hi there, i spent a month in Songkhla a few years ago, its a bit quiet there i think because of the troubles with insurgents, but i loved the place, the people are very friendly, Simila beach is good for food and a swim, there are heaps of little bars and restaurants around the town and interesting drives across the harbour on the ferry.
It is easy to get a bus from Hat Yai of a taxi from the airport, i used my Lonely Planet book for all my info, it was right on for prices
