Manhattan Island Manhattan In Two Nights?
Posted: Fri September 9, 2005 11:55 PM UTC
Hi NYC
My wife & I will arrive Manhattan, 1st time, Thur 17 Nov but just for 2 nights. We do not like organized tours. I want to make the most of our too short visit. We are looking for the typical toursit stuff. What do you figure are the must do's? We will walk/subway/ to most venues.

BTW, I booked the Travel Inn on West 42nd street. Did I do wrong?

Thanks

How about using the Big Apple Greeter service. Its a free service and they will meet you at your hotel. You can book for a 2 hour or 4 hour tour and they will take you to the main attractions or something more off the beaten track.

I stayed at the Travel Inn. You can read my review on here...it wasn't the best or the worst place I've stayed. Times square is not a bad walk - two to three long blocks. If you are short on time...and it sounds like you are...you may want to plan on hailing cabs. There is no doorman at the Travel Inn to do it for you, but there are plenty going by. That would be faster than walking to the Port Authority subway stop and going from there. Besides...a cab can take you right where you want to go without too much hassle.

Thanks for your reply Nancy531. I read your review on the inn and it sounds pretty much what I was looking for, good location anyway. Yeah, I will proabably wimp out and take cabs if time runs short and I start to panic.
Cheers,
Walt

If you are going to get a taxi, try to only get one if you are going up or down town.

if going across town take the subway, it can take ages

Thanks cathy2907, that’s good to know. I know this will sound pretty lame but is up or down town travel like going from 57th St to 14th St?
Thanks again

Hi,

Yes the streets run across town SO if you are going From 14th to 57th you will be going up town. If you go from 1st avenue to 7th you will be going across town. I would stay somewhere along the 7h or 8th avenue express. Ideal for getting around quickly. i think where you are staying is well located.

have a great time

cathy
