I had the chance to stay with my family at the Riviera last year. The hotel is a bit old and not that fabulous but if you're on a budget then it will do. You can certainly walk through all the hotels even if you're not a guest as their casinos are open to the public.

Here's the website for the Riviera -http://www.rivierahotel.com/mainpage.html there are some pictures there. It is an older facility, but I found the rooms to be comfortable, and as the previous poster points out, it is convenient to everything else.

I did stay at the MGM its the biggest in L.V. which is kind of cool and you will never lose sight of it as its large and green.

Photos can be seen at the above link.
You can walk into any hotel for a look around and visit all the hotel casinos.
This is a town that never sleeps day and night in doors or out its all moving.
Inside you can lose track of the time.
All have casinos most: have pools; most if not all have shops.
Enjoy and don't lose too much money the house always wins.
How do you think the cash came from to built those lovely hotels?

Hello!
I was at Excalibur hotel a few years ago and it was fine, I really liked it!
Anyway I visited MGM grand, too and I think it is better, but I don't know if it is more expensive!
My favorite one was The Venetian hotel but I suppose it is really expensive! (I just visited it)

I;ve been to Vegas numerous times so I should be able to help you : )
Riviera Hotel - DONT STAY
Excalubur Hotel - OKAY
Barbary Coast -DONT STAY
Ballys hotel - DONT STAY
Monte Carlo - OKAY
For 950us you can get a much nicer hotel than any of these.
Check the rates for Paris, MGM Grand, Luxor, New York New York if none of these work out, then Excalubur would be your next best choice. Normally you would never have a problem getting the hotels I mentioned for your price range but because of New Years prices will go up, I am just not sure by how much.
Goodluck!!

We visted recently & stayed at the Luxor. Good size rooms, beds, baths, seperate walk in showers. Not the most expensive nor the cheapest, probably a 4 star. I'd recommend it

RE: Which hotel? Posted: Sun September 4, 2005 03:57 PM UTC
It all depends on what you want. At New Year's you won't be looking for a pool to lounge at so lets focus on Location vs Hotel ratings-
Riviera- so so hotel at best with so so loacation
Excaliber- lousy hotel, so so location
Barbary Coast- lousy hotel, BEST location
Bally's- nice hotel, BEST location
Monte Carlo- very good hotel, not bad location.
It looks like you're leaning towards lower priced hotels? Have you considered The Tropicana, Imperial Palace, Harrah's. Personally, I suggest you look at the Flamingo. But of your list- we had a great stay at Monte Carlo and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

tigger1978,
New Years, and fight nights, are the most busiest and expensive times in Vegas. You can take your average hotel rate during the off season, and times it by 10. Obviously you have noticed that, and i dont think that some of the people that are replying to your question understand that.
Being that the prices are so outrageous during new years, i would more or less focus on location of your casino and a cheap price. The one thing you will discover is that you will end up spending 90% of your time in every other casino but your own. All the hotels that you listed are not bad. The best of the 5 listed would have to be Excalibur, Monte Carlo, and Ballys. All great locations, and if the prices you listed are what you can get for that time of the year, then thats not all that bad.
Dont wait to long to book, cause the prices will only get higher. If you are splitting the prices with mates, then the prices are even better. If you want to go even cheaper then that, i would recommend looking at the Circus Circus. Still a not bad location, but cheaper. In the end, its just a place to sleep, and Vegas is a easy city to get around in. There is so much to do in Vegas, you will barely ever be in your hotel. When i lived in Vegas, i was never in my apartment. Good luck with your search!
Kind regards from Perth,
Bryan
