It is quite easy to travel from Hat yai to any part of Malaysia. If you willing to pay bit more, you may take flight from Hat Yai airport to Kuala Lumpur, airline that serving this sector is AIR ASIA (budget airline), and the fare are quite reasonable (ranging usd 10 to usd 50) depend on how early you book ./ detail and booking available at www.airasia.com / however, land transportation is also not difficult to arrange. You can walk in any travel agent in Hat yai to buy bus ticket to Kuala Lumpur or Penang (northern city of Malayisa) The bus ticket are quite cheap and doenst cost more than usd 20.

Hat Yai has a lot of shopping malls, but it isn't a very attractive city. You can hire a taxi to take you to Songkhla (about 1 hour drive), which is a quiet and attractive seaside city. There is a nice beach there and many cheap seafood restaurants. Very pleasant. I can't really comment on the security situation there though, because I went just before all the current troubles started.

There is ongoing violence between Muslim insurgents in Thailand's deep south and the government. Bombings and shootings occur on a frequent basis. Several months ago, a bomb was detonated by insurgents in Hat Yai airport, causing several injuries and I believe at least one death. I would advise to exercise more caution than normal if you visit this area.
