1) My experience, in 1992, was nasty: too hot, dirty, tap water was undrinkable, heaps of rubbish on every corner -stressed by the fact that there was a garbage worker's strike at the time-, big rats anywhere (and I'm not easily impressed) and a general feeling of unsecureness. Also, the sky kept always overcast and the flies were vicious at anytime, but especially at night.
The only funny things were the wild iguanas roaming around the city centre streets, but I should add that the people was always friendly and polite. The city was just nasty, and according to a friend who was there last week, it had not changed. Glospi

There´s a lot of nicer places in Ecuador...Montañita, Quito, Baños...but I´d skip them all and go straight up to Colombia!

I hope so, Daniel (we share the same name), as I am very nostalgic of Ecuador and looking forward to go there relatively soon. I know that the current situation of Guayaquil should not last for too long but, sadly, compared to the more amiable environment of the highlands, it looks quite bad. Anyway, as I said, I enjoyed very much the contact with the local people, besides being the first Ecuadorian city I visited, and the first place where I saw black people in the street (you know, here in Chile we are pretty isolated, and Blacks are really unusual), so I have fond memories of their inhabitants anyway.
I write in English to let VT'ers to understand, but I speak Spanish as a first language (ya sabes, escribo en inglés para que los demás tipos del VT puedan entender, pero mi primer idioma es castellano) Saludos por allá! Glospi

I am peruvian (from Lima) and were to Guayaquil on 2001's June.
I liked the city, as I saw it more ordered and neat than Lima, probably because it is a smaller city. I liked places like the Iguana Park and the Millenium Shopping Center. Also having a river so near was a nice experience. BTW colonial buildings are not as rich as the peruvians (I suppose Quito and Cuenca should be different for better). Something that impressed me was seing homeless people in the streets making fire. I would love to have more time for exploring beaches and maybe Montanita. I am planning a trip for next July 28-29-30, during peruvian national day's holidays, as Lima is quite cold and rainy this days.
