Durban Cost of living

How much does it cost for a family to live in Durban. (Spouse + 1 child + one depended elder = 4) I heard the cost of education is high in SA? I am expected to draw a salary of US $ 3000/- pm will I be able to live comfortably with the entire family?

Hi the same question was posted by Gangu on 2 Aug in this forum. Have a look there. Just scroll down the questions a bit. there are detailed answers. If you need more info on anything specific please ask again. That is over R18000. It's more than what a lot of South African's earn.

Thanks for the response. Gangus post did not cover the family cost. While I am clear that at R 18,000/- a single person can live very comfortably, but can a family of 4? My worry is about medical expense, education in a good school for an child in 8 th grade, rent in a good locality…could you help? Also if you know some agency in Durban who can help me with this process do let me know.
Many thanks.

Yes it makes a difference. Renting or buying an average house. I would say work on R5 000 - R 6 000 per month. It can be less. Durban is a bit cheaper than Jhb. I pay R2 500 per month for medical for a family of 4. Schoolfees vary. Public school - I pay R500 per month for my child in GR 8. there are very good public schools but if you want to go for a private school it can be R1 500 - R 3 000 a month. Water and lights etc about R1 500 a month. Security with armed response about R300 or less. House and car insurance varies. The newer the car the more you pay on insurance. To give you an idea we have 2 cars insured, an older and newer one plus house contents and it costs about R650 a month. TElephone and cellphones (again depending on what you will use. ) Mine work out to about R700. use it quite a lot. Leaves you about R5000 to R6000 for groceries etc.

Hope this helps a bit.
