there is a restaurant in the old city, on the main street, just before the japanies bridge, on the left sid of the street. It's front is to the main street, but there is also an enterance from the cannal street. we ate there twice, and both time everything was EXCELENT

I would suggest the restaurant name: "Cafe des Amis". Only one thing : they don't have the menu, but they offer the excellent food. If you are picky eater, so you'd better check what kind of food they have for that night such as: seafood or chicken.... Enjoy your time there. Beautiful city.

Everywhere in Vietnam has recommnendations books for their businesses. WE read the book for this restraunt and couldn't leave! THey were on the canal, very small but the best 'grilled fish in banana leaf' I've ever tasted. Its a must. If you ask someone they'll know it!

Just looking for something else about Hoi An and stumbled across this site. We just got back from 5 days in Hoi An. We went to Cafe des Amis on the recommendation of some friends... very good. We are both vegetarian and you can ask for the vegetarian set menu without any problems (the previous comments are correct, there is no "menu", you eat what Mr. Kim wants to cook that day!).

We also went to the Red Bridge Cooking School out of the Scout Hai restaurant/Cafe 111 in the old city and it was fantastic! Highly recommend it to anyone interested (less expensive and seemed a better deal than the others offered, in particular better than the Mermaid Cafe).

Hai's Scout Cafe. Fantastic food, trendy arty surroundings. Crispy wantons the best i've ever had. You can do a cookery course there too.
