Renting in New York, Manhattan
Posted: Mon August 22, 2005 03:24 AM UTC
Hi

I will be in New york in Dec this year. Do you know anyone that has a room in their apartment to rent for about a month around that time? I am looking for a place that is close to bus/train and in a safe area. My budget is less than US$1000 p/mth. Do you know of anyone or have any suggestions?

Also do you have any suggestions on areas to avoid when I rent?

Much appreciated,
Jane

Hi,

A useful website to find sublets and even temporary shares is http://www.craigslist.com/ You can enter the amount you would like to pay, and if you narrow it down to a neighborhood, enter that as a parameter.

I will defer the 'which areas are safe or to avoid' to other posters, as I just moved here and do not want to risk giving erroneous info.

I was going to suggest Craigslist too. it's a great resource for what you're looking for! also there is aprilslist but it's not as extensive as craigslist.

as far as neighborhoods are concerned... if you are from out of town you might not want to stay in washington heights (or north of there) or the neighborhood called "alphabet city". Parts of it are great and trendy and super hip, but i wouldn't stay on avenue D... but A, B, and most of C are fine.

otherwise, I'm not too sure.

Good luck! and enjoy your stay!

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm abit confused about the Alphabet avenues as I thought NYC uses numbers for their streets?

NYC does use #'s for most of their streets. when you are downtown (about 14th street to Houston St) there is alphabet city. As you go east, the #'s go down... then after 1st Ave, there are Avenue A, B, C, and D, then the FDR highway and the east river.
