South Sulawesi Province Travel Forum

Travelling from Bangkok to Sulawesi at the end of September. I have to be in Manado, Sulawesi by the middle of october, so will have about 10 days to do this journey. What might be the best way to do it, taking in a few sights along the way? Has anyone travelled on local sea craft (fishing boats etc) is this feasible? Thanks for your help.

Can go overland from Bkk to Singapore with some sightseeing on the way and then fly over with Silk Air.

For 10 days for journey i will suggest u :
1. Flying From Bangkok to Jakarta
2. From Jakarta to Makassar
3. From Makassar to Manado

that's the easiest way . U can still spend for several days in Jakarta and the city near by such as Bogor, Bandung, Lampung- Sumatera /Kalianda Resort Krakatau Festival during August and September [ only took 6-7 hours from Jakarta , 2 hours from city, 3 hours for accross the sea by ferry , approximately 1 hr to reach the place/town Bandar lampung ] then come back to Jakarta and fly to Makassar. In Makassar u should see Losari-Tanjung bunga Beach harbour ,Khayangan Island ,very nice venue. and some museums also. then fly to Manado. Dont forget to visit Bunaken for Diving.

I quite agree with vee01's reply above. This is exactly what I did when I was there a couple of years back. The internal flights in Indonesia are very reliable and not that expensive considering the distances involved. When you get to Makassar there will be lot of tour operators touting for business at the airport. Dont necessarily ignore these guys. Some offer a very good service. I took off with one company who showed me all over south Sulawesi and I had a very good time. Local knowledge is important. The monkey forest is worth seeing as are some of the forts. Most locals were very friendly on my visit but things deteriorated shortly afterwards with bombs going off. I think maybe its quieter now so have a good time. Don't miss sunset on Makassar harbour promenade, its really cool. Personally I would give Bali a miss. It was a big disappointment.
