Jaipur Train from Mumbai
Posted: Tue August 9, 2005 07:10 PM UTC
Hi

im coming to jaipur next week from mumbai and i was planning on taking the 2955 from mumbai central that leaves at 18:50 and arrives in jaipur around midday the next day. i was planning on going 2nd ac but then remembered that would mean the windows would be blocked up so i wouldnt be able to see anything...what would people advise? im thinking most of the journey is during the cooler hours of the day so ac shouldnt be an issue, should i take sleeper? the only classes available on this train is 1/2/3 ac and sleeper class, will i get a decent night's sleep if i do?!?

thanks in advance for your help...im also on the look out for meeting people in jaipur as im going to be staying there til the end of this year.

2nd AC offers 3 comforts compared to non-ac sleeper : more cleaner, more room, A/C. Note : the operative word is "more". At this time A/C is not a must assuming you can tolerate 25-30C. I am willing to trade-off A/C for "seeing" especially if the temp is no more than 30C. If you want more room you can take 1st class (non-A/C).

It depends on how you can sleep through noise. The AC classes tend to block outside noise when the trains stop at platforms. In a sleeper class, you will have the windows up for ventilation so basically you will be hearing aall sorts of staion sounds once you stop at a station. The windows in the AC class are not blocked but are dark and you see the outside world with a shade of green or blue depending on the colour of film used to cover the windows. Then if it rains you will have to shut the windows in the sleeper class which means it can get a bit stifling, while in the AC it wouldn't be a problem. And since you say that travel will be in the cooler hours anyway, it'll be dark so you won't be able to see much outside anyway. So may as well take some comfort since there is an option. And you won't need to carry any kind of bedding in th AC class as they provide you with clean sheets, a pillow and a blanket.

Hi there,

First of all, most of your journey is at night so I don't think you can see anything out the window anyway but in the morning (the next day) when you are nearing Jaipur you will surely miss out on the sights if you want to take pictures from the window as the thick glass is dark but you can still look outside the window as the daytime sun will make it easy to see things clearly, but if it is cloudy then you won't see much. If you want to make pictures then just go to the door and look out from the open door!!! If you want a comfortable journey then the normal (non AC) first class is the way to go though it is not airconditioned unless it is first AC which is more expensive than first class which is just a simple sleeper class but only with two people in each cabin so there are no bunk type berths above your seat. Also the 2nd AC is more roomy than the 3rd AC which has three berths like the normal sleeper class but only AC. And if you are not really worried about the luxuries in train travel then just go by the Sleeper class which is the cheapest way to go unless you travel in the unreserved general compartment which is cheapest!!! HAHAHA!!! I am sure you will get a decent night's sleep if you are on the upper berth but then the seat you get is the aisle seat or the small seat on the sides of the train. So you will not get a window seat if you want the long sleeper berth. The other window berth has a smaller length for sleeping if you are taller than five feet, then you have to sleep with your legs bent and it is not too comfortable, believe me, I am six feet tall and I have to sleep in a Z shape on these berths!!!

One word of caution: Please do not accept anything to eat from strangers especially tetrapak drinks like Frooti which are laced with drugs to put unsuspecting passengers to a really sound good night's sleep and decamp with all of their belongings. So please be careful as there have been a lot of such instances on Indian Railways and even some army men in uniform have been looted in this way!!! This is not to scare you in anyway but just have your wits about you when you travel.

Hope this helps!!!

Hope you have a comfortable, safe and enjoyable journey whichever class you travel by and have a nice time in India!!!

Cheers,
Aadil.
