Schloss Neuschwanstein Marienbrücke? Better view?
Posted: Mon August 8, 2005 09:16 PM UTC
Hiya!

Soon I'll be able to cross one more place off my "to go before i'm old and grey"-list: Neuschwanstein!!!!

As Germans hardly ever go there I couldn't get good tips on where to go and where not to go yet. That's why I ask here now.

(1) I've heard that Marienbrücke is the place to get pictures of the castle? How do I get there? Is it really the best place for picture taking or is there a better one?

(2) I am not too interested to go inside the castle. Will I still have to pay when I just want to go to Marienbrücke or do I pay at the gate of the castle? Is the inside any interesting?

(3) What's the parking situation?

(4) Anything else I shouldn't miss?

Thanks a lot in advance for all your answers. You see, it's not easy being a tourist in your own country ;)

Oh I forgot one question. I am scared of heights - will I survive Marienbrücke? It looks very scary in pictures.

Thanks!

Hi Sabs,

You can take awesome pictures of Neuschwanstein from Marienbrücke...we were there in June (just haven't posted the pictures yet). We took the shuttle bus up from the bottom of the hill and it let us out near the Marienbrücke...or you can walk up from the parking lot. Will take about 45 minutes to an hour to walk up, but once there the views are magnificient. I don't think you have to pay to walk up, but you will have to pay a small fee to take the bus...we did not have a problem with parking (I believe it was $5 euro). The castle tour was nice especially with a knowledgeable guide, but we wanted to do the tour.

Hi!
When do you plan to be there? I know a nice walking/hiking path, not hard!!, from the valley station of the Tegelbergbahn towards Neuschwanstein castle. You will not walk there in a crowd of tourists, but really nice through a little canyon (the one over which you will see Marienbrücke). The arrival is just behind the castle. From there just a few meters to Marienbrücke.

No, you will not have to pay to get there, you can even go inside the 'Innenhof' (however it is called in English... :) ) and watch the Queues waiting to get in ...
Check on my mainpage the linklist. You will find a link to a cycle map, which covers pretty detailed also the area around castle Neuschwanstein.
In case you are interested, I can show you personally as a small VT-meeting (in case I have time and my foot is healed until then) or give you a map by email with the path to Neuschwanstein + Marienbrücke.
Take care, Christian.

Forgot:
Parking at the Tegelbergbahn was never a problem, at the castles parking it is pretty busy, but guess you also will find a place...

We took the horse carriage from the base to the top...and it stops very close to a huge map made of wood. And from there is a path to walk to the bridge. And
you walk from there...it is a short walk. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/293a3/86dd/1/
you will get to see the castle with a nice background. And from the castle you can see the bridge as well...around the entrance...just before you pay.

I am afraid of heights..so i only ventured not far - just midway. It all depends...if there is crowd...than the suspended bridge made me nervous...but if you tell people you are afraid they may just let you go first take you picture. I survived it..i am sure you will...

There is a waterfall if you like hiking.

It's been two weeks since I came back from the south already and I have been busy ever since. So this comes a bit late.

I wanted to say THANKS for your advise again ... and I wanted to tell you that I survived Marienbrücke alright. I was a bit shakey at first but got used to it quickly. I am glad you didn't tell me in advance that the floor was just wood though - I wouldn't have gone if I had known I think ;)

We had a great time at Neuschwanstein! I never enjoyed a real tourist trap that much I think ;)

tourist trap it may be - it remains awesome to me...that someone would be so mad enough to build this castle for generations to admire.
You know, i pass by this mosque in my home city - every now and then...and it still appeals to me...tourist trap or not!!!
