| Mount Everest | Mt. Everest physical preparation Posted: Sun August 7, 2005 09:31 AM UTC
I am interested in doing a 15-23 day hike to Mt. Everest base camp. Living in Florida doesn't give me access to mountain or altitude training. Can someone who has made the climb give me an idea what type of training or what type of bench marks should be done in preparation for the hike? I am a 35 year old runner and I work out with weights.
Thanks Mike |

With your type of training you should have a good fitness base?
From my experience. You dont need to be a mountain superman for Everest Base Camp. Suggest you use the stairmaster more at the gym, get used to taking your pack around (are you using porters/on an organised trip). Try build up to some activity every day. e.g. its only gentle walks, with your pack, on your rest days from running and gym. Ease up in your training in the last 10 days. As you may have red nothing can tell how you react to altitude. Suggest you make sure your itinery allows enough time (15-23 days sounds about right). Try to walk a steady, slow, pace. You'll enjoy it more and tend to acclimatgize better. Hope some of this helps. Enjoy yourself.

You sound like you will be just fine on the trek, just pace yourself. Don't go to high to fast and you will have no problem, although you might consider getting a prescription for diamox from your doctor just as a precaution before you leave the US. I am curious when you will be trekking, I will be over there in a couple weeks myself. TTYL

Physical preparation before a trek is must. The more prepared the more you will enjoy the trip. Simply carrying the daypack of 5-7 kg and ups and downs the stair also does help.

Sounds like you are probably fit enough. I would recommend Diamox 250mg half twice a day to help c the altitude sickness. You can get from doc at home or buy in Kathmandu. Drink plenty of water.
