Hi,
I 've just come back from Latvia & Lithuania west seaside- Kurzeme and Zematija and Riga. I don't know what you like, but for me unhabited, sandy beaches of Kurzeme with tiny wooden villages was on the top.Riga history and navigation museum is pretty interesting.Jurmala- nothing special, just another sea resort (a litlle bit even neglected for me).Ventspills has better and intersting seaside park and more attractions like the castle and open air fishery museum (a narrow gauge railway is operating on weekends) , interesting and renovated (but not over-renovated )downtown, scenic fisher's houses, a nice seaside promenade.Kolka cape- nothing really special for me.Kuldiga- an small, old city was on my way.The waterfall wasn't to impressive for me, the regional museum either but the city has something special for me.We went of the protestant church tower near the river but unfortunately we missed the time as the bell was working - i guess an every full hour.We didn't visit Riezupe river sandy caves (i had forgotten about visiting it).Edeole -the church and the castles- interesting buildings.Aizpute is a nice tiny scenic city -but even smaller than Kuldiga.Liepaja- the city was once beautyfull, but now unfortunately a bit neglected buildings- but I liked it.The church with one of the biggest organs in Europe and an interesting way on the church clock tower. The historical museum -very interesting.Karosta- the former Russian and Soviet navy base-the district inhabited mainly by Russians very poor and devastated area, an interesting ortodox church interior. You can see there old Russuan military houses. I guess that the remains of old forts mentioned in guides are litlle bit further outside of the city (i havn't checked it).Karosta prison museum- nothing special-a bull *** for westerners. If somebody wants to see real tough comunism time life should rather visit any Baltic states ocupation museums (well, I grow up in comunism time -hence it is not for me either).Palanga- Lithuanian sea-resort. An interesting manor with Amber Museum, nearby Kretinga manor with interior museum and winter garden (restaurant inside).Klaipeda -I liked a historical downtown. Kursiu lagoon- very scenic dunes.Kaunas -an old city also worthy to visit.I saw Bauska castle (but very quick view), located on direct Riga -Vilnius road, but it didn't impressed me.
The end of my personal review.
Take care,
Maciek
