RE: RE: Travel from Larnaca airport to Kyrenia HELP Posted: Thu August 4, 2005 05:53 PM UTC
I hired a car in Larnaca yesterday and went to Kyrenia to collect some underwater photos I shot last month. The attitude of the car hire companies is variable. One company I used to use declined to rent a car when I told them I was going to TRNC. The company I did use told me I would be entirely on my own if the car broke down or crashed. It would be up to me to get the vehicle back to the border and they would then collect it from there and supply areplacement vehicle. The customs post does not like letting through breakdown recovery trucks for some reason and the cost to the hire company is very high so many won't do it. I am not sure what the attitude of the international companies like Avis is but their prices will probably be higher. It is high season here now so rental prices are going up but you can still get an aircon Nissan Almera for 20 Cyprus pounds a day. Some companies include a full tank of petrol which you have to return full. Others give you an empty tank and no credit if it is returned half full. The roads in TRNC are quite good. Kyrenia is busy with traffic. If you get the chance to drive up the panhandle coast road to Tatlisu (about 45Km from Kyrenia) you will see some very nice mountain scenery. (Buying property in the north is risky due to dubious property rights)
